Making a Difference in Practice
Passion is an essential component to success. Developing in my profession as a Clinical Nurse RN, I discovered a passion for Preceptorship through the unique connection of the teaching/learning relationship. I also developed a passion for research and the significant role it plays in my own nursing practice. Leadership opportunities have privileged me to put these passions into practice. Through active leadership as a unit-base practice council co-chair as well as collaboration with several organization-wide healthcare professionals, I have found myself even more pointedly invested and involved on my unit, specifically related to preceptorship practices and research/evidence-based practice development.
My understanding and appreciation for the significance preceptorship plays in the training and retention of employees at UCH has made me an effective liaison for preceptor practice. It has also supported my review and influence for system wide change. A primary tool I accredit to both my passion as well as my influence as a preceptor is the UCH Preceptor Policy. My growing interest related to this policy and it's impact on my unit came into play with expansion of the AIP OR starting in June 2014. With the opening of four OR's and additional four more in July 2015, a substantial increase in new hires also stimulated an increase in the number of active OR preceptors. Within this time of growth, I identified an opportunity for improvement related to the training, education and experience levels of OR preceptors. Within this section please enjoy reviewing the work I completed to research, modify and update the UCH Preceptor Policy in hopes to better support OR preceptor practice.
An additional opportunity I took the initiative to pursue was creation of an OR Documentation Guideline. By December of 2014 as residual of the AIP OR unit expansion, a peer RN and myself recognized an opportunity for improvement related to EPIC documentation practices. I choose to collaborate with a peer RN to develop and support OR staff by identifying and addressing standards for documentation. Through a successful partnership with a peer RN and a dedicated stakeholders group, the OR Documentation Guideline transitioned into a teaching standard tool to better serve the OR staff and additional EPIC Op-Time users. Therefore, within this section please review the work I completed and collaborated to examine and format a teaching standard tool to supplement best practices related to Op-Time EPIC documentation.
