AIP OR Preceptorship Survey During reflection of my preceptorship practices I came to the realization that as a unit, the AIP OR had a deficiency in readily available preceptor resources and training. Recognizing this and the awareness of my passion for precepting provided an opportunity encouraging me to advocate for change.

Understanding the growth and development of our unit through expansion and a influx of new staff revealed to me that the OR staff required support in preceptor training to adequately meet the unit staffing needs. Assuming the leadership role to create this change also encouraged me to reference my peers for comments and/or concerns related to preceptorship preparation and practice within the OR.
As I chose to pursue this project, I was enthusiastic to seek out the immediate opinions of my peers related to their preceptorship practices and experiences. The method I elected to facilitate this process was through survey collection. Prior to creating and distributing the survey, I completed a FOCUS PDCA performance improvement tool to both identify and organize an achievable plan for preceptor development . Through the completion of this tool I was qualified to create a comprehensive list of questions for survey that would permit me to assess the primary concerns of my peers. The framework of the questions address preceptor role definition and characteristics, frequency precepting, role formality and support, access to training and incentives. The AIP OR Preceptorship Survey was comprised of ten questions, including multiple choice, ranking and free text comment responses. The survey was distributed to 155 AIP OR Staff members on October 1, 2014 and closed October 31, 2014. Approximately 69 of the 155 AIP OR Staff members responded and completed the survey. The documents below support part of the preparation completed in designing the survey. Please enjoy reviewing the FOCUS PDCA as well as the AIP OR Preceptorship Survey (Monkey) Questions.

AIP OR Preceptorship Survey Results
Once the survey was closed, an in-depth review and analysis of the results was completed. During this review period, the primary trends identified throughout the survey responses recognized dissatisfaction with current preceptorship practices/support as well as advocacy for specialty/OR focused teaching.
Reviewing the initial survey results revealed a direct correlation with the primary concerns identified in the FOCUS PDCA tool. The immediate support for addressing the difficulties related to our unit preceptorship practices was encouraging to continue the pursuit of this project. The insightful reviews of my peers were also validating to establish the course and to create the curriculum. The documents below highlight the survey results in data form as well as the analyzed free text comment responses. The final document is the PowerPoint presentation that I reviewed at a unit staff meeting to disseminate the survey results and announced the planned implementation of the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course. Please enjoy reviewing these documents and the significant impact they provided as evidence the creation and foundation of this course.
