Unit Based Project: Improving and Empowering Preceptors in the AIP OR
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge". -Albert Einstein
Progressing in my professional nursing practice, I have established a passion for precepting. There is something special about the teaching-learning relationship that not only supports fellowship but also encourages efficiency and continuity in practice. My growing passion for preceptorship has meaningfully blossomed over the past year. The fare that supports this passion is directly related to the significant role I commenced to create and facilitate an OR specific basic preceptor course.
With my frequent practice and recognition as a role model preceptor, I discovered a deficiency in readily available OR specific resources. I also identified an absence of availability for adequate training to support preceptor practice within this specialty care area. With these reflections and findings, I choose to seek out the adept opinions of my peers related to preceptorship preparation and practice within the OR. Ultimately, the results of their feedback was supplemental to my suggestion for OR specific basic preceptor course and supported the creation of both the course and curriculum/content.
Through this opportunity I have had the distinct ability to both collaborate and teach. Partnering with other health care professionals has enabled the organization's endorsement of this course as well as eased the implementation and continuation of the course. This project also supplied an opportunity for me to explore and exercise my ability to teach. Assuming the responsibility to create this course also accompanied the accountability to instruct the course. Fortunately, taking on this formal role was an organic transition from the teaching skill set I have acquired through my preceptorship experiences.
Please enjoy reviewing the substantial work I completed to implement a valuable unit based project for preceptors via the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course.
