Teaching Activity: OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course
With development of the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course accompanied the opportunity to put the content in practice through facilitating classroom sessions.
Considering the significant dedication and effort I contributed to review, organize and cultivate OR specific content, I was eager to present and teach the course to my peer preceptors. To facilitate this process and prepare for presentation, I elected to shadow the outlined Preceptor Program UCH Basic Preceptor PowerPoint. However, the PowerPoint presentation I developed differs from the Preceptor Program presentation in that I incorporated essential elements from my comprehensive literature review as well several OR specific resources within the presentation. I also developed four OR focused facilitated discussion scenarios as additional content to engage the learners. Again, I elected to shadow the approved criteria of the Preceptor Program scenarios but altered the scenarios background to accurately reflect preceptor roles, responsibilities and accountability within the OR setting.
Prior to presentation, I sought out several members from the AIP Preceptorship stakeholder's group to assess and appraise both my PowerPoint presentation as well as the OR specific facilitated discussion scenarios. I also completed a comprehensive literature review to support the content development of the course and scenarios. The evidence-based preceptor program practices, constructive criticisms as well as unanimous approval encouraged me to implement the content into practice for the AIP OR. To achieve this, I fulfilled the teaching role and facilitating two classroom sessions of the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course. The document below reveals my references list with Levels of Evidence for the course content development.

Maximizing Capacity to Meet the Needs of a Transforming Profession
In Patricia Benner's book Educating Nurses: A Call For Radical Transformation (2010), she reviews innovative ways of “Improving Nursing Education at Program Level”. Benner asks of our profession how nursing education can maximize capacity and meet the needs of a transforming profession, (Benner et. al, 2010). I believe my outcomes, both current and projected, are part of an innovative plan to meet this need. After two successful classroom sessions, eleven AIP OR staff members have obtained preceptor certification with OR focused training. I was able to measure this accomplishment through surveying the staff who completed this course. The data results and comprehensive analysis of these surveys can be found and reviewed in the New Knowledge, Innovations & Improvement section of my portfolio. This course also enabled preceptor certification of the AIP OR to double last year's total number of certified preceptors, just within three months. The graph below demonstrates that at midpoint 2015, implementation of my OR Specific Basic Preceptor course facilitated certification 100% from 2014 to 2015. Using this trend to project future directions and the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course remains to be offered quarterly as planned, the number of certified OR preceptors will have increased 200% from 2014 to 2015.
Implementation of the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course has allowed the AIP OR to have ownership over the multimodal preceptor course and schedule staff on a quarterly and as needed basis. This flexibility supports the continuous growth of the department and will supplement certified preceptor training needs as additional influxes of orientating staff occurs.
My development of the course has also ignited staff interest to teach future classroom sessions of the OR specific content. For example, three ORPC members have already volunteered to facilitate future courses after personal completion and certification based off my content development. My influence with this course has brought awareness to neighboring units including the AOP OR and the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) of the Anschutz Medical Campus. My OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course content has also extended reach to Memorial Hospital, a new sister-facility within the UCH system to support the preparation of their preceptors.
As the course and outreach of my content continues to grow, so does my desire to teach. I discovered that my experiences and advanced practices precepting have made me both a proficient practitioner as well as a knowledgeable instructor. Pursing the opportunity to both teach and share my content with other healthcare professionals within the UCH organization has helped validate the value and application of my content and will also support continued offerings of the OR specific course.
Below I have included the unique OR specific PowerPoint and OR focused facilitated discussion scenarios that I created and utilized as primary teaching tools in the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course. Please enjoy reviewing each document below as evidence as to how I implemented and shared my expertise in preceptorship practices with my peers.

The additional documents below serve as more evidence backing the teaching practices I have contributed for the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course. The documents include the attendance records from both of the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course's, meeting minutes referencing future ORPC course facilitators and communication supporting the development and implementation of my content into practice through expanding the course sister units, departments and facilities within the UCH system.
