Transformational Leadership
My journey of personal and professional growth over the past year has generated several leadership opportunities of which I feel privileged to have pursued and participated in. These leadership opportunities allowed me to identify, review and revise practices within my unit and also within the University of Colorado Health system. Committing to these opportunities has allowed me to blossom into a capable, knowledgeable and influential role model Clinical Nurse RN in the AIP OR.
I was fortunate to assume several different leadership roles and leadership projects over the past year. The primary opportunity that I attribute my motivation for my leadership involvement and development is my membership to the OR Preceptor Council. Accepting this position highlighted and validated my passion for preceptorship. It was because of my expressed passion and dedication that I was also nominated and elected as the OR Preceptor Council Co-Chair. Assuming this role helped me to truly identify practice areas for improvement and encouraged me to take on the necessary responsibilities to make an impactful and supportive difference.
One significant project I collaborated and partnered to provide exceptional leadership was the creation of EPIC documentation standards. Reviewing and resourcing the creation of this teaching standard tool was essential to not only support the OR staff with best practices but also to provide continuity throughout the unit and for nursing staff that reference the intraoperative chart postoperatively throughout the patient's stay in our hospital. A secondary project that I was able to initiate and implement was the training of preceptors in the OR. With the support of both my peers and leadership, I assumed the responsibility to renovate the training practices of OR preceptors. The product of this renovation was the creation of an OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course modeling after the UCH Basic Preceptor Course, utilizing the blended course model of both Elsevier and Mosby's modules.
Having the ability to make a positive and effective difference on my unit has facilitated my personal and professional development as a leader. Assuming the responsibilities and accountability to co-author a teaching standard tool as well as produce a preceptor training course has only encouraged me to continue to pursue leadership opportunities. I am confident these leadership qualities and practices will benefit our patients but will also continue to support my peers and will maintain my own professional practice. Caring about and practicing these passions has ultimately inspired my successful creation and implementation of essential training courses and primary resources for the AIP OR related to preceptorship and EPIC documentation practices. Please enjoy reviewing the work I have completed to build and transcend my leadership practices.
