OR Specific Facilitated Discussion Questions
As previously mentioned, the UCH Basic Preceptor Course is a blended learning course that incorporates online modules with a facilitated classroom session. During the time of collaboration to create the OR course, I established that the primary goal was to reflect the UCH curriculum and to also provide supplemental OR specific support and training. Therefore, the blended learning course design was applied and refurbished to fulfill the unique skill set of the OR preceptor. To support the renewal of the curriculum, I elected to revise the Preceptor Program's PowerPoint presentation as well as to author four original OR specific facilitated discussion scenarios.
When I began writing the facilitated discussion scenarios, I partnered with Monica Brock to evaluate her involvement and experience in authoring scenarios for the Perioperative Preceptor Course. Monica reviewed the process of scenario development and provided me with scenario formats to base and build OR specific scenarios. By collaborating with Monica, I was encouraged to complete four OR specific facilitated discussion scenarios that would reiterate content of the online modules, engage the learners and confirm the validity of the OR Specific Basic Preceptor Course.
Once I had completed drafting the four facilitated discussion scenarios, I invited a group of my peers and practiced professionals to review and edit the scenarios. I also presented the scenarios for review to my peers via an Operating Room Preceptor Council (ORPC) meeting. As representative unit preceptors, ORPC members contributed their expert opinions and elected to approve the scenarios for use during the OR Specific Preceptor Course. The presentation of these scenarios also interested and encouraged several of the committee members to volunteer to facilitate future OR Specific Preceptor courses. The evaluation and feedback completed by practiced professionals including Monica Brock, Bebe Hoff and OR Clinical Nurse Educator, Kaci Meddings MSN, RN, CNOR established that the facilitated discussion scenarios were applicable and approved to be utilized for the classroom session.
With unanimous approval, the facilitated discussion scenarios were implemented as the primary teaching tool during the classroom sessions of both OR Specific Basic Preceptor courses. During each classroom session the learners engaged and utilized their new knowledge and resources to complete the scenarios. I enjoyed sharing and reviewing the scenarios with the learners to assess the applicability to OR preceptor practices and to obtain feedback on the effectiveness of the open discussion. To validate this, I surveyed the learners opinion of how helpful the facilitated discussion scenarios were related to preceptor preparation. The graphs below identify how the learners agreed that the OR specific scenarios I created were a supportive teaching tool and how I was an effective facilitator of the course.
